Deb Mukharji was a member of the Indian Foreign Service. He has been walking and photographing the Himalaya for five decades. He conducted the first group of Indian pilgrims to Kailash and Manasarovar in 1981, when pilgrimages from India were resumed after a hiatus of twenty years. His photographs have been published in numerous journals and featured in exhibitions where they have been critically acclaimed for their artistic quality. His first book The Magic of Nepal, featuring photographs and accounts of his walks in the Nepal Himalaya appeared in 2005.

This pictorial book weaves together the different strands of faith and mythology associated with Kailash and Manas while underlining the enormous and multi-faceted influence which the region has wielded on lands and peoples near and far. It recounts the experience and observations of pilgrims and visitors over the centuries and some of the geographical controversies associated with the region. The text is accompanied with over two hundred photographs taken in the course of the author’s three visits in the span of twenty-one years.
