Description

Emmanuel Frémiet (1824-1910)
Although being both the nephew and pupil of François Rude, Emmanuel Frémiet had difficulties in starting up his career.
At the medical school, he worked on casting anatomical pieces, then went on to zoological studies, presently kept at the Jardin des Plantes of Paris.
Well-known as a sculptor of animals, he received state commissions such as the equestrian statue of Joan of Arc, standing in the Place des Pyramides in Paris, as well as the groups crowing the top of the pylons set on the Alexandre III bridge.
His concern with historical truth, as well as his precision in the rendering of detail gave him a notorious reputation.
Until his death, E. Frémiet maintained a high interest in teaching his own drawing class at the Jardins des Plantes, where he had replaced Antoine Barye.
