Description
Aphrodite was the Goddess of Love, beauty and fertility, identified in Rome with Venus. Her graceful body symbolizes the Greek ideal of beauty. This depiction reproduces a Roman copy of an earlier Greek Hellenistic work. It once stood in the center of a pool of the Domus Aurea of the Golden House built for emperor Nero in Rome. This statue has been called Aphrodite Kallipyge since ancient times. “Kalli Pyge in Greek means “beautiful posterior and it seems to have been an appropiate description of the vanity of Aphrodite who removes her dress and looks back over her shoulder to admire the reflection of her beautiful body in the pool.
